Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used systems of healing in the world. It originated in China more than 5,000 years ago. Traditional Chinese medicine states that there are are nearly 400 acupuncture points on the human body, connected by 12 pathways called meridians. These meridians conduct energy, or qi (pronounced "chi"), between the surface of the body and its internal organs. Each point has a different effect on the qi that passes through it. Qi helps regulate balance in the body. It is influenced by the opposing forces of yin and yang, which represent positive and negative energy and forces in the universe and human body. Acupuncture keeps the balance between yin and yang, thus allowing for the normal flow of qi throughout the body and restoring health to the mind and body. Unlike hypodermic needles, acupuncture needles are sterile, single-use needles. They are super-thin and are inserted to much more shallow levels than hypodermic needles. Most people feel only a minimal amount of pain or tingling as the needles are inserted. Some people reportedly feel a sensation of excitement, while the most common is to feel deeply relaxed.
Acupuncture is regulated and licensed in the United States. Acupuncturists go through a rigorous three Masters degree or Doctoral program that involves approximately 2,700 hours of full time study dedicated exclusively to learning and practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each acupuncturist is Board certified through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and licensed in their respective state. NCCAOM Board certification means they have completed their degree through an accredited institution, passed three Board exams covering all aspects of eastern and western medicine, passed a Clean Needle Technique exam, and completed nearly 1,000 supervised Clinical hours on patients.
It is important to remember that acupuncture seeks to support and balance your body so that it can effectively heal itself. When you have the right combination of resources your body responds!
